Thanksgiving Dinner and Your Teeth

It’s that time of year again and Thanksgiving is right around the corner! This holiday is all about gathering around the table and enjoying a delicious meal with family and friends. But, did you ever think about how Thanksgiving dinner affects your teeth? Let’s take a closer look at all the different Thanksgiving foods:
-Turkey
Time to gobble up some turkey! The main course is packed with protein and other minerals such as calcium and vitamin D. These minerals actually help keep your teeth strong and fight off decay.
-Stuffing
Stuffing usually contains onions and celery, which cleanse your teeth and fight off bacteria in your mouth. However, because stuffing can stick to your teeth, be sure to drink plenty of water to flush out bacteria and to brush your teeth before bed.
-Cranberry Sauce
Cranberry sauce can be both good and bad for your teeth. Cranberries contain vitamin C, vitamin E, and vitamin K. These berries are also naturally sweet so contain little sugar. Avoid adding sugar to your sauce recipe. On the other hand, because of color and acidity, cranberries can temporarily stain your teeth.
-Mashed Potatoes
Who doesn’t love turkey with mashed potatoes? Potatoes are a great source of vitamin C, B6, and potassium. Mashed potatoes also often contain dairy products (which contain calcium), such as butter, cheese, and milk. But, be careful! The starches in mashed potatoes can easily turn into tooth decay.
-Pumpkin Pie
Now, it’s time to finish your Thanksgiving meal with pumpkin pie. Pumpkin is very good for your teeth. One of the main benefits of pumpkin is vitamin A. Vitamin A helps keep your gums healthy and restores your enamel. Though pumpkin is good for your teeth, the sugar in pumpkin pie is not. Make sure to drink plenty of water and milk with your dessert! Milk, which is filled with calcium, and water will help strengthen your teeth and flush away any harmful bacteria.
