What Causes Snoring?

Unless a patient is suffering from sinus or nasal congestion, snoring is a symptom of a collapsed or obstructed airway. The soft palate and collapsed tissues in the back of the throat can vibrate as air passes through it. It is this vibrating tissue that produces the sound of snoring. Common causes are large tonsils, sleeping position, alcohol consumption, excess weight around the neck, or sleeping pills and muscle relaxers. Snoring can also be a sign of OSA (obstructive sleep apnea). This disorder causes sleep deprivation and lead to increased headaches, migraines, heartburn, and an increased risk of high blood pressure, diabetes, stroke and male impotence.

What Is Sleep Apnea?

OSA is a common condition in which your breathing stops and restarts many times while you sleep. This can prevent your body from getting enough oxygen. You may want to talk to Dr. DalBon about sleep apnea if someone tells you that you snore or gasp during sleep, or if you experience other symptoms of poor-quality sleep, such as excessive daytime sleepiness.

There are two types of sleep apnea.

Obstructive sleep apnea happens when your upper airway becomes blocked many times while you sleep, reducing or completely stopping airflow. This is the most common type of sleep apnea. Anything that could narrow your airway such as obesity, large tonsils, or changes in your hormone levels can increase your risk for obstructive sleep apnea.

Central sleep apnea happens when your brain does not send the signals needed to breathe. Health conditions that affect how your brain controls your airway and chest muscles can cause central sleep apnea.

How Do I Get Started?

If you or a loved one suffer from sleep apnea, the first step is to schedule a sleep consultation with Dr. DalBon. He will evaluate your condition and prescribe a Home Sleep Test (HST).  The New Jersey Center for Laser and Cosmetic Dentistry uses the Watch PAT One at-home sleep test to learn more about your sleep needs. A sleep physician will evaluate your results and diagnosis. Once you have been diagnosed with sleep apnea and recommended for Oral Appliance Therapy, we will take measurements of your mouth and jaw to create a custom-fitted oral appliance. Lastly, Dr. DalBon will fit and adjust the device as needed to ensure maximum effectiveness
